A Little Biography of Cathy Smith
"Green Rain" was written in one of my many favorite places, Harvard
Yard, probably when it was raining. It was not a forest, although I have lived near many beautiful forests and even owned two small ones when I finally got enough money to live that way - which was incredibly wonderful. A word about the beauty of Harvard Yard: the trees there are the largest I have ever seen throughout the entire country -- and I really fell in love with them and sat underneath them frequently in light rain and fog to relax -- and also to wait for the bus. The bus stop was nearby in front of George Washington's yellow house (his regional headquarters during the Revolutionary War) which is now a Harvard administration building. There are beautiful, flowering and fruiting cherry trees over by Harvard business school, as well as very tall pine by the old Kinkos Xerox place which attract large owls in the summer.
Other favorite places include the Florida Everglades, the Mojave desert in California and the Pacific ocean near Santa Monica and, of course, Venice Beach. More later, in my chapbook and on this site. There are poems written about each of these places in my work.
"Green Rain" was written about a women's campground in Kent's Store, Virginia even though I actually did most of my writing/editing in Boston . Baby toads, (the size of a thumbnail) used to crawl up my water bucket at night. They were so small they could have been eaten by the Daddy Long Legs spiders that annoyed me by scratching around underneath my tent floor. They were practically transparent and tiny, very... Also, there weren't any mosquitos and the spiders didn't bite. I had a great time there. Lived there for about two months. They had a wonderful, hot outdoor shower.
One last thing -- I have some instructions on how to read my Poetry Journals. See them as a 'Book of Days' -- like a calendar. They were my diaries, yes even the photos, so they were meant to be read to one's self or to someone else...one poem at a time, like a good pastry or a fine Nori roll with Umeboshi plum filling depending on your tastes. So enjoy a taste here (and a bit of Zen)...at your leisure...
My second chapbook "Wishes On The Edge Of Time" came out the winter of 2016, which was appropriate since there are a lot of winter poems in it. Living in a rural area, out in the weather a lot, chopping fire wood, etc. means that rain and snow mean something to me more than the individual that stays inside all day long.
(Note: my photos are high quality color and black and white digitals. All my poetry books can also be viewed as photo albums.)
